360 Video Performance Issues

We have been experiencing issues with 360 Videos taking upwards of 15-20 seconds to load while also seeing them then continue to buffer/freeze.   This is despite using the guidelines outlined in the Knowledge Base Article https://community.trivantis.com/knowledge-base/best-practices-creating-360-degree-video/

Our end user devices for this particular project are iPAD tablets with strong WIFI connection.

My video team says that any additional compression will render the video quality as unacceptable due to pixelization, etc. These are short videos taken with a Ricoh.

Any suggestions or others experiencing similar issues?

    Hey Robert,

How are you serving the videos to the iPad? Are you using the CenarioVR iOS app? Is it coming from an LMS?

Do the videos reside on the LMS?

    Hello John,

No we are not utilizing an LMS for this particular event.

We are experiencing the slow load & lag via the App, as well as when launching the published link straight from web browser.

My media specialist is attempting to tweak the compression/bitrate settings again to try and make the files smaller, although the image quality is degrading.

    Bob

Are you referring to running the CenarioVR Web Application on the iPad (the authoring platform), or running the iOS App that is used to view published scenarios?

    Hello John,

I run the authoring platform on PC/Laptop only.  We are using two methods of testing with the iPAD:
    1. Downloading the APP and launching the scenario there.
    2. Publishing the Scenario for "CenarioVR Live and Mobile" via the author tool on PC; Copying that URL and then launching that link via browser on iPAD

Update to our issue...we have tweaked videos and now have better performance, although the sharpness has suffered a bit.  My media specialist shared the following info with me regarding the final compression/bitrate settings used:

    <Start>Hello Bob,

Prior to loading into Premiere, I have been down sampling the source 4K footage to HD using Ricoh’s application.

Down sampling means that I  am reducing the resolution. The Ricoh camera that we have shoots 4K footage (3840x1920) , I use their app to reduce it to HD (1920x1080) before chopping it up and compressing it.

Once in Premiere here are the setting I have been using:
    • Exporting video only, audio unchecked (though there are no audio files linked in the timeline anyway)
    • Encoding with the H.264 codec
    • Bitrate Settings:
      • VBR, 1 Pass
      • Target Bitrate: 5.1 Mbps
      • Maximum Bitrate: 6.4 Mbps
    • VR Settings
      • “Video is VR” checked
      • Frame Layout: Monoscopic
    • Time Interpolation: Frame Sampling
These settings are essentially the same as the Adobe preset: “Match Source – Adaptive Low Bitrate” with some minor changes.

In our case 40 MB seems to be the magic we need to stay below to ensure smooth playback on our devices (iPADS).

For longer duration clips I adjust the Target and Maximum Bitrate parameters down until the exported file is less than 40 MB in size.

The end users device ultimately is what will dictate our target file size. It’s a matter of trial and error to determine what the magic number is for each device. In general, we capture footage at the highest bitrate we can and then compress down to accommodate the end user.  <end>

Based on today's testing using 360 video with these settings, it looks like we are ready for our event next week.  I thought I would share this should anyone else face similar challenges.
