style generic radio button with external CSS

Looking for some tips on how to go about pretty-ing up the default radio buttons/check boxes for quiz/test questions. This stems from an issue I am having with the modern buttons.
When using the modern buttons, something in IE 11 seems to be blocking the clicking of said radio button/check box. I just now found out that if I click the text next to the button, it works - but clicking the actual radio button does not work.
So... I guess my preference would be to find a solution to that, but in the absence of that, perhaps some external CSS might be the next best option. Any ideas?
(latest version of Lectora, Title options does not have 'use web accessibility settings' checked, and strangly this may be an issue only once the content is uploaded to the LMS (HealthStream) - just tried it out in Reviewlink in IE, and the buttons actually do work there...)

We had this exact problem; for us it manifested itself only after publishing to our LMS (Cornerstone). When we changed the compatibility setting from IE10 to "None" -- which, as it turns out, means IE will behave like whatever version it is instead of trying to behave like IE10 -- the problem went away.

So in case anyone is interested, I ended up finding out that our IT had HealthStream added to the 'Enterprise Mode Site List', putting the HealthStream site back into IE 9 settings instead of the browser version of 11. (this would show up as 'Document Mode 9' if you are in the browser in your developer tools - Emulation tab.
Once I had them take the site off the list, everything worked!- Adam Cain
