Audio Hardware Suggestions

I need hardware suggestions for recording audio. As a microphone I use a Plantronics DSP (mike/headset). It was not design for high quality recording. Does anyone have suggestions for a microphone in the $100 - $300 range for a Dell PC?
I also often record audio from the telephone. I have Polycom Sound Station Premier with a Mini Mix A/V mixer. The problem is when there is silence the phone tries to increase the volume and it adds distortion to audio. There is no way to turn off the feature that increases the volume.
I primarily use Camtasia to record the audio, I have used Audacity but don't see that it is any better than Camtasia.
