Aha! I think it *was* some kind of pop-up blocker issue or something... Ctrl-clicking the links seems to make them work just fine! 
Thanks for the clarification!
Additional info: I forgot to mention (for anyone else who experiences this problem), that I had to continue to hold down the Ctrl key until the File Download dialog box appeared. (A quick Ctrl-click on the link didn't do the job.)
