Sometimes it's the microphone that introduces the problem and not the software. The best types of microphones are those with USB connections as they offer a better connection to the computer than the standard RS32 type plug. Logitech makes a really nice one for around $50.  Check your local Best Buy or other large computer electronics store, they may be in with the games as gamers use headsets all the time.
