Parsing Strings

As a new users I have been puzzled by the lack of any ability to parse strings, to search for specific characters and values and to split/return values for substrings. Consequently I have had to write my own Javascript functions to do this outside Lectora.Any idea why the developers have not given us this functionality. We are also missing proper maths functions to manipulate numerical data.
